North Palm Beach

North Palm Beach is a waterfront village of roughly 13,300 residents in northern Palm Beach County, built around the Intracoastal Waterway and known for its municipal golf course, marina communities, and a housing stock that ranges from condominiums to multimillion-dollar estates. Incorporated in 1956, it was developed by John D. MacArthur, the same landowner behind neighboring Palm Beach Gardens, and won a National Association of Home Builders award as the nation's best planned community that same year.

From Mangrove Swamp to Planned Village

In 1954, MacArthur paid $5.5 million for 2,600 acres of land in northern Palm Beach County that had previously belonged to Sir Harry Oakes, a wealthy mining magnate. That land became the foundation for North Palm Beach, Lake Park, Palm Beach Gardens, and Palm Beach Shores. Development crews dredged former mangrove swamp and farmland to create the waterfront cul-de-sacs that still define much of the village today, and built Lighthouse Drive as a new east-west connector between Old Dixie Highway and a realigned U.S. Highway 1. Oakes' own castle-like home on U.S. 1 was later converted into the clubhouse for the North Palm Beach Country Club. The village has counted a number of notable residents over the decades, including golf course architect and longtime resident Jack Nicklaus, whose signature design still anchors the municipal course today.

Neighborhoods & Real Estate

North Palm Beach's real estate spans a wide range, from condominiums in the low hundreds of thousands to waterfront estates well into eight figures. The Village of North Palm Beach, the original single-family neighborhood built around the municipal golf course during the village's initial development, remains one of its most established addresses. Three of the area's best-known gated waterfront communities, Lost Tree Village, Water Club, and Harbour Isles, sit within North Palm Beach's borders and are significant enough to have their own dedicated coverage elsewhere on this site. Waterfront living in general, whether directly on the Intracoastal or tucked into one of the village's protected canals, commands a real premium here given how limited that inventory is, and it's the defining feature of this market for buyers who want boating access without leaving Palm Beach County's northern tier.

Shopping & Dining

U.S. Highway 1 functions as North Palm Beach's main commercial spine, lined with everyday retail, casual restaurants, and small shopping plazas like the Shops at Village Square. Local dining leans toward casual and family-friendly, seafood-forward, and international options including Italian, Mediterranean, Greek, Thai, and Cuban restaurants, with more upscale shopping and dining just a short drive south in Palm Beach Gardens at the Gardens Mall and Downtown at the Gardens.

Parks, Beaches & Walkability

The Village of North Palm Beach owns and operates its own municipal country club, home to a links-style golf course that is one of only two municipal courses in the country designed by Jack Nicklaus, along with a renovated 50-meter pool, ten lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, and full clubhouse dining, all open to the public. Anchorage Park, on the Intracoastal, adds a marina with resident boat storage and ramp access, a fishing dock, sand volleyball, ball fields, and a dog park. John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, Palm Beach County's only state park, sits just south of the village with 1.6 miles of undeveloped Atlantic beachfront, snorkeling, and nature trails. Walkability in North Palm Beach is fairly modest village-wide: Walk Score rates it around 40 out of 100, or Fairly Walkable, slightly above the statewide average for Florida's largest cities, with a handful of shopping plazas within easy walking distance of some neighborhoods but most of the village still car-dependent for daily errands.

Schools

North Palm Beach falls within the Palm Beach County School District. The Conservatory School at North Palm Beach, a public school with a Gifted & Talented magnet program located in the village itself, is the standout local option. Families outside that program's enrollment area are typically zoned for Lighthouse Elementary, Howell L. Watkins Middle School, and William T. Dwyer High School, all part of the district's North Region. Private options in the surrounding area include The Benjamin School, a PK3-12 campus nearby in North Palm Beach.
